A drinkable meal is a ready-to-drink food that combines all the macro- and micronutrients of a full meal in one bottle - protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals in defined quantities. Unlike a protein shake or smoothie, it covers a broad micronutrient profile and provides enough calories to actually replace a meal.
The term is reminiscent of astronaut food - and indeed that is where it originated. Today, however, drinkable meals are aimed at healthy people who are looking for a practical meal for everyday life. The medical variant (enteral nutrition, prescribed by a doctor for malnutrition or swallowing difficulties, for example) is a different product with different requirements. Our article on liquid nutrition provides a deeper insight into this category.
The nutrient density distinguishes a high-quality drinkable meal from a prettied-up milkshake. It is not the flavour that determines the quality, but the ratio of nutrients to calories - and whether sugar, sweeteners or fillers dominate the ingredients list.
Sugar and sweeteners: When looking at the ingredients list, it is the overall picture that counts - not individual ingredients in isolation. Saturo uses maltodextrin as a readily available source of carbohydrates and sucralose as a calorie-free sweetener. There is no added sugar; the natural content is 1.0 to 1.5 g per bottle. The combination is crucial: 36 g of protein and 7.7 g of fibre from chicory root slow down the rise in blood sugar that maltodextrin alone would cause. That's why it's worth looking at the overall nutritional profile of every drinkable meal - not just the question of "with or without sweetener".
Protein - quantity and quality: Protein is the most satiating nutrient. The more protein in a drinkable meal, the longer it lasts - provided the quality is right. The amino acid profile is just as important as the quantity. Soya provides all the essential amino acids and has a high biological value. Saturo combines soya bean with field bean and comes to 36 g per bottle - more than most drinkable meals on the market.
Micronutrients: Many drinkable meals provide calories and macronutrients, but leave gaps in vitamins and minerals. If you replace a meal with a drink, this drink should also provide the micronutrients that would have been in the meal you skipped. Make sure that each portion covers a relevant proportion of the DACH reference values.
Fibre is often neglected in drinking meals - although the DGE recommends at least 30 g per day. That's around 7-10 g per meal. Saturo provides 7.7 g from chicory root (inulin), a prebiotic fibre that supports your gut microbiome.

The fats come from rapeseed oil - rich in unsaturated fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acid ALA, which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Protein contributes to the maintenance and gain of muscle mass - at 36 g per bottle, the Saturo drinkable meal is also a complete option after training.
There are six flavours to choose from: Cocoa (bestseller), Vanilla, Strawberry, Banana, Cappuccino (with caffeine) and Natural (completely without sweeteners). Unsure which flavour you like best?
The alarm clock rings at 7.30 in the morning and you have to leave the house at 8.15 am. Breakfast? That's cancelled. Or it consists of a bread roll with jam - 300 kcal, hardly any protein, no vitamins. A drinkable meal is made for days like these.
Situations in which Saturo is a useful supplement:
No drinkable meal can permanently replace a varied diet with fresh foods.

It depends on the product. A drinkable meal with a complete micronutrient profile, high protein content and no added sugar is a sensible addition to a balanced diet. Check the ingredients list. Saturo provides 26 vitamins and minerals, 36 g of protein and is sugar-free.
